Mock Trials
here are several trials that will take place. Each takes ONE CLASS to fully run through. You will have a role in one or two and be on the jury in another. Each person should consider what role they are willing to take on and know that the teacher may assign you roles regardless of your desire.
Mock trials are a major assignment.

Timelines:
Mock trial in class work takes place in Decembrer and January. It is a portion of the 15% RST (the other portion is 2 T-charts per student made up during the live trials and submitted afterwards. In class students present the mock trials on January 11 & 12. ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY. Rubrics for are here along with the competitive scoring criteria and tutorials.

R v. Clarke
This script is based on an actual case of Regina v. Jeremy Matthew Coles, which was decided in Surrey Provincial Court in 2000. A 19-year-old man is accused of causing the death of two people. In the script, it is alleged that Jamie Clarke wedged a stick between the accelerator and the front seat of a stolen vehicle and sent it careening through an intersection, where it crashed into a motorcycle carrying the two victims. Clarke is charged with two counts of criminal negligence causing death. The case has roles for a judge, court clerk, crown and defence counsel as well as eight witnesses.

This fascinating and controversial case is based upon the 1986 trial of Wesley Evans, who was charged with two murders. Some persons believe that Evans, a confessed double murderer, was acquitted by the Supreme Court of Canada because of technicalities in the Charter of Rights. The case has roles for a judge, court clerk, crown and defence counsel as well as seven witnesses.

This script is loosely based on the case of Louis Bayard, who was charged with murder arising out of an incident in Vancouver in 1986. The accused’s defence is that the killing was a justifiable act of self-defence. The case went all the way to the Supreme Court of Canada. The case has roles for a judge, court clerk, crown and defence counsel as well as seven witnesses.

R v. Girard
This script is based on a case from Manitoba: Regina vs. Lavallee. The case was decided in the Supreme Court of Canada in May 1990. In the script, Nicole Girard is charged with the second degree murder of her live-in boyfriend. For years, Girard had been violently assaulted by her boyfriend. The case has roles for a judge, court clerk, crown and defence counsel as well as seven witnesses.

This script is based on the trail of D.A.E., who was charged with sexual assault in 1991. Besides encouraging students to focus on the difficult and controversial legal issues arising from this case, the script encourages thoughtful discussion on personal lifestyle choices and their effects. The topic, acquaintance rape, is both important and timely. The case has roles for a judge, court clerk, crown and defence counsel as well as seven witnesses.

R v. Howard
This mock trial explores a topical and controversial issue – alleged assault by a teacher on a student. The script is loosely based on the case of Regina v. Swanson, which was tried in BC Provincial Court in Masset in 1993. The case has roles for a judge, court clerk, crown and defence counsel as well as seven witnesses.

This mock trial explores a youth crime - so the person charged is under the age of 18. The crime is possession of a narcotic.

This is a sentencing hearing - so after a guilty verdict they hear from each side to plead to the judge about the sentencing decision.

R v. Skywalker - Scripted Case
Criminal Trial: Luke Skywalker is charged with the destruction of the Death Star and the murder of 5999 people who were on the Death Star at the time. The Emperor, Darth Vadar and a Storm Trooper will testify for the Crown and Luke Skywalker, Hans Solo and Princess Leia will testify for the defence.

R v. Superman - Scripted Case
Criminal Trial: Superman is charged with breaking and entering a warehouse and with committing mischief. Constable Peters, Mr. Costco and Mr. Power will testify for the Crown and Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen and Superman will testify for the defence.

Format
On the first day, all teams participate in the preliminary rounds. The top four teams then advance to the semi-final and final rounds, which this year will be held in the evening, one week later. Teams can compete in either English or French. In the preliminary rounds, English-speaking teams compete against English-speaking teams, and French-speaking teams compete against French-speaking teams. All teams are scored according to the same score system and ranked together to determine the top four teams overall. In the final rounds, court interpretation services are used to allow for bilingual trials.
